Oamaru Town

More To See & Do in Oamaru

Restaurants, Cafes & Pubs

Oamaru may be a small town but we’re big on hospitality – so you’ll find a great range of eateries and watering holes here! From vineyards and award-winning restaurants, to affordable little takeaway spots, to cafes pouring seriously good espresso coffee… and – of course – a few cool pubs and bars to enjoy live music and a drink or two! We also have our own brewery - Scotts Brewing Co. - and a specialty Whisky Bar.

Farmers Market

Every Sunday between 9.30am and 1pm, Oamaru town centre is a buzz with the local Farmers Market. There’s a fantastic selection of local produce, including fruit and veges, home-baking, eggs, meat and fish… plus great coffee and live music!

Vintage Steam Train

Take a trip back in time on the Oamaru Steam Train, travelling past historic landmarks and alongside the Oamaru harbour. Great little 30 minute ride – runs every Sunday (except Christmas Day).

Whitestone Cheese Factory

At the Oamaru Whitestone Cheese factory, you can see speciality cheese making in action. View directly into the make, press and blue maturing rooms, and sample some of the 18 varieties.

Steampunk

New Zealand's favourite Victorian Steampunk attraction is right here in Oamaru – a quirky, interactive Steampunk gallery/museum, with futuristic machinery, awesome multi-media art, a Steampunk playground and a space-age locomotive that gets fired up after dark.

Oamaru Gardens

Over 100 years old and beautifully maintained, the Oamaru gardens feature secret garden rooms, bronze and marble sculptures, an aviary, fountains and more.
